Karlsruhe Transformation Center for Sustainability and Cultural Change (KAT)
Despite various efforts, the “great transformation” toward a more sustainable lifestyle and economy has stalled – at the global, national, local, and organizational levels. It is becoming increasingly clear that technical innovations are indeed indispensable and essential for sustainable development, but that social innovations and, eventually, a profound cultural change must take place as well. Against this background, ITAS has established the Karlsruhe Transformation Center for Sustainability and Cultural Change (KAT), which is particularly dedicated to the societal challenges of sustainable development.
The KAT runs research and transformation projects and, in addition to research, combines education, consulting, and process support. Methodologically, the focus is on transdisciplinary and transformative approaches, with the aim of researching, developing, and accompanying sustainable solutions in cooperation between science and practice.
The KAT team has many years of experience and special expertise in real-world lab research and support of transformation processes. Since 2012, for example, it has been running the real-world lab District Future – Urban Lab with numerous subprojects and experiments and has also provided essential theoretical and conceptual impetus for real-world lab research. Building on the competencies and structures of real-world lab research, the Karlsruhe Transformation Center is one of the first of its kind in the world – always oriented toward the guiding principle of sustainable development.
