AI-ASSISTED EXPLORATION ROBOTS
In the BMBF-funded KIARA project, ITAS is working on AI-assisted robot systems for defense against radiological hazards. The researchers investigate the ethical aspects of the technology and want to develop a blueprint for practical standards.

PIONEER OF TA: ON THE 90TH BIRTHDAY OF HERBERT PASCHEN
Against much opposition, the economist Herbert Paschen established technology assessment in Karlsruhe and paved the way for TA for the German Bundestag. An appreciation of the first head of ITAS by Armin Grunwald.

SURVEY ON URBAN GREEN SPACES
Citizens in Germany and South Korea should be more involved in the process of adapting urban forests to the consequences of climate change: This is the goal pursued by ITAS PhD student Jaewon Son with the online survey “Benefits of Urban Green Spaces”.

Personalia:
Armin Grunwald has been a member of the Sustainability Commission of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) since March 2022. The recommendations of the Commission on anchoring ecological sustainability in funding activities have now been adopted by the DFG bodies.

Linda Nierling was awarded the status of “KIT Associate Fellow” by the KIT Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. This entitles the head of the research group “Digital Technologies and Societal Change” to independently supervise doctoral students.

Patricia Oviedo Toral successfully completed her dissertation on “Assessment of a sustainable proposal for a solar energy system for the rural Mixteca – Puebla, Mexico” at the KIT Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
