Climate Adaptation Plan Santiago de Chile handed over [20.03.2013]
The project "Climate Adaptation Santiago and Regional Learning Network", funded by the International Climate Initiative of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU), handed over a climate change adaptation plan to the regional government of Santiago de Chile. The main objective of the project was to develop climate change adaptation measures for the metropolitan region of Santiago de Chile in the most affected sectors – energy, water and land use. The research project focused on the following issues:
- What major changes in climate are to be expected in the metropolitan region?
- What are the consequences of these changes for the metropolitan region?
- What risks and vulnerabilities of the region and its inhabitants arise from the effects of climate change in the metropolitan region?
The project was carried out by scientists from two research centers of the Helmholtz Association in close cooperation with partners in Latin America. Based on a participative process involving local and regional actors, different products for practical use in the metropolitan region were developed in the project.
- Climate Adaptation Plan Santiago
- Manual for the implementation of the plan
- Manual for experts in the field of climate change adaptation
- Locally adapted information material for two municipalities
ITAS was responsible for developing the framework scenarios as well as for the topics of energy and water. The project was completed with the handing over of the materials to the regional government and local authorities. The plan is currently undergoing an internal approval process by the authorities.
